It flourished for a long time but the river was deepened and when in 1806 a brig called the Harmony sailed right up the Firth to Glasgow itself, Port Glasgow ceased to be the port for Glasgow. For the visitor, the maritime history has left a legacy to explore. Dumbarton was famous for building ships, one of the best known of the shipbuilders was William Denny and Brothers who built the Cutty Sark, the famous tea clipper. It is in this wonderful county that history has been made time and time again at the magnificent Dumbarton Castle.
