Ballater is a relatively new community but one which has already a very colourful history. It was formed around 1800 by Francis Farquharson and his nephew William to support the spa that they were developing at nearby Tullich. After the railway arrived at Ballater in the mid-Nineteenth Century the town grew rapidly for it was both an attractive holiday destination and the station which serviced the nearby royal Castle of Balmoral. Some aspects of this history are given within this website.
The Ballater Local History Group was formed in 2008 and already the interest in its activities has proved almost overwhelming. The attendance at the meetings has been exceptional with much debate and many people have reported items of potential interest. The group is seeking to expand its activities and intends to present talks about local history as well as developing archives of photographs and documents.
The area around Ballater has been settled for well over 2000 years and there is a wealth of archeological remains particularly in and around the Muir of Dinnet. Although Ballater itself is a relatively modern town, nearby communities such as Tullich and Crathie have connections with the early Christian saints. Much of the land around Ballater has traditionally belonged to the Gordon or Farquharson families and ruined Knock Castle testifies to the conflicts between the Gordon and Forbes families. Ballater did not exist before 1790 and much of its growth took place in the middle years of the 19th Century. This is why two features of Ballater stand out the array of fine Victorian stone-built houses and cottages and the fine straight roads that make up the village centre.
Despite its brevity, there is much of interest in the history of Ballater. On this and the accompanying pages some items from that history will be related. Visitors to Ballater in recent summers could be forgiven for believing that the River Dee is a docile stream as it flows under the fine stone-built bridge. However, the Dee is often a strong and fast flowing river. At times crossing the river by ford or ferry can be dangerous. Even building a secure bridge across the river has not proved easy. The present bridge is the fourth to have built on that site.
The existence of Ballater itself is dependent on the bridge. Prior to the construction of a bridge the principal road between Aberdeen and Braemar went through the Pass of Ballater and by-passed the swampy land where the town of Ballater is now located.
