Banffshire, former county, northeastern Scotland; the North Sea port of Banff was the county town. The region remained largely Roman Catholic after the Reformation (16th century) and suffered greatly in the ensuing struggles. During the English Revolution (17th century), Banffshire was a Royalist stronghold. Located in the area are the ruins of several medieval castles and the 12th-century church of Gamrie. In 1975 Banffshire became part of the newly created Grampian Region.

The history of the Banffshire Coast is naturally, and inextricably, linked with the sea; and geologists can date the area back as far as 350 million years ago when the area was submerged by Lake Orcadia.

A rich vein of archaeological sites runs along our coastline such as the Bronze Age site of Fort Fiddes at Cullykhan Bay. Its been described as one of the earliest industrial sites in Europe, as beads have been found there which suggest that the fort was trading with continental Europe as far back as 700BC. Banffshires position means that it seems to have been a sitting duck for Viking raiding parties!

A series of bloody battles have taken place on the coast including that of the Bleedy Pots (Bloody Pits) in Gamrie (known as Gardenstown). The Scots defeated the Danes by rolling large stones down the hill towards the Danes who were slaughtered as they tried to escape over the brow of the hill. The event was marked for centuries by three skulls fixed into niches in St Johns Kirk. The church is now a ruin but can still be visited. Todays Banffshire Coast inhabitants still experience a regular Scandinavian invasion by sea but of far friendlier sailors for the annual Scottish Traditional Boat Festival.

Coastal fortifications can still be found along the coastline including the rugged ruins of Findlater Castle on a tiny peninsula with a 50 foot drop to the sea below. A castle was first recorded here in 1246. The name gives a clue to the undoubted Norse influence in the area fyn being white and leitr cliff so called because there is quartz in the rock. (Extreme care should be taken around the castle due to its current state and its position on the cliff edge.)

Proximity to the sea, and therefore ease of access to trading routes, led to the establishment of some surprisingly delicate trades. Banff was once a center of excellence for silversmiths and they were capable of producing sophisticated work to rival that produced in Edinburgh at the time. From the 1680s to the 1880s there was a succession of 24 silversmiths working in Banff alone. One of the oldest surviving Scottish teapots, which is said to date from circa 1715 – 20, can be seen along with a wealth of other local artefacts – at the community run Banff Museum.

Characters from any Jane Austen novel would have felt quite at home in Georgian Banff which was a winter retreat for the 18th century hoi polloi. Prosperous merchants and landowners built their town houses here, perhaps giving, or creating, a ready market for the silversmiths. Original Georgian architectural details survive to this day on buildings around every corner.
