Kincardineshire (also referred to as The Mearns) is in the North/East of Scotland and is bounded on the North by Aberdeenshire, from which it is divided by the river Dee; on the East by the German Ocean and on the South and West by Forfarshire, from which it is divided by the North Esk. Much of the county is covered in water with the rest being cultivated land, woodland, moors, mountains and hills. The county is locally divided into four districts, – the Grampian, the Dee-side, the valley or Howe of the Mearns, and the Coast-side. Known as Scotland’s Castle and Whisky Country, this region of Scotland is truly blessed with outstanding scenery. You can sample the “water of life” and visit the distilleries and cooperage on the world’s only Malt Whisky trail or follow the Castle Trail taking in the finest gems the region has to offer. Or head to the coast where vast empty beaches, interspersed with picturesque fishing villages and dramatic cliff top scenery are waiting to be explored.
For the visitor who can pull himself away from the delights of the Whisky Trail, there is much to enjoy. Skatie Shore/Highland Boundary Fault describes the shore all the way south of Aberdeen. It is rocky, but there is a small sandy bay at the foot of cliffs at Skatie Shore. The Highland fault-line passes from along the Skatie Shore in Stonehaven in the East, to Helensburgh in the West and divides Scotland into the Highlands and the Lowlands. The natural scenery here simply has to be experienced for the drama of it.
Whilst near Stonehaven, look in on Dunnottar Castle, a dramatic and evocative ruin. As you wander around the extensive buildings you are surrounded by the sea and the cacophony of gulls and other seabirds as they fly around the cliffs below. If you experience a sense of deja vous, it could be because Dunnottar Castle was the location for the 1990 film version of Hamlet starring Mel Gibson. Even if there was no castle at Dunnottar, the site would still be impressive; an enormous flat-topped rock with sheer cliffs on three sides. This site was chosen in Pictish times as place of strength and by Saint Ninian as a place of retreat. William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and the Marquis of Montrose have all graced the Castle with their presence. Most famously though, it was at Dunnottar Castle that a small garrison held out against the might of Cromwell’s army for eight months and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels, the ‘Honours of Scotland’, from destruction.
