Thornaby-on-Tees is situated between Stockton On Tees and Middlesbrough, close to Ingleby Barwick, Acklam, Billingham and Norton in the north-east of England, in Teesside, the area formerly known as Cleveland, in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees. The meaning of the name stems from the village of Thornaby being originally settled by a Viking called Thormad or Thormoth, of Danish origin. The name was spelled in various ways over the centuries including Turmozbi, Thormozbi and Tormozbia in the eleventh century. Later spellings included Thormodby, Thormodebi, Thormotebi, Thormotheby and Thormotby. The form Thornaby first appears in 1665 and refers to old Thornaby village near the River Tees. Old Thornaby was initially built around St Peters Church and the old village green but In the nineteenth century, it was gradually overshadowed by the burgeoning town of South Stockton on the Yorkshire side of the Tees opposite Stockton on Tees. In 1825 it became the site of a pottery and quickly grew with the establishment of shipbuilding and engineering in the area. South Stockton gradually grew so big that eventually, the little village of Thornaby got swallowed up. In 1892 South Stockton and Old Thornaby merged into one to form the municipal borough of Thornaby on Tees.
Thornaby lies within the historic county boundaries of Yorkshire, and it was made a municipal borough of the North Riding of Yorkshire in 1892. Thornaby-on-Tees lost its independence when it was amalgamated with other areas such as Middlesbrough, Redcar and Stockton-on-Tees in 1968 to form the county borough of Teesside, and then in 1974 it became part of the borough of Stockton-on-Tees in the new non-metropolitan county of Cleveland. Although on the opposite side of the River Tees and in a different county, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council approached Thornaby-on-Tees Borough Council on several occasions over the years with a view to an amalgamation between the two authorities, however, these ideas were refused outright by Thornaby-on-Tees Borough Council.
