Wick is a Royal Burgh town and port in the north-eastern Highlands of Scotland over-looking the North Sea with the River Wick dividing Wick and Pulteneytown. Wick was given Royal Burgh Status in 1589. A famous resident was Robert Louis Stevenson, who stayed here for part of his childhood. Wick is in the Guinness Book of Records for having the smallest street in the world; Ebenezer Place dates from 1883 measuring 6ft 9. Wick is an ancient Viking settlement; named from the Norse Vik meaning Bay, although there is evidence of earlier Neolithic/Bronze-age inhabitants with Chambered Cairns, burial grounds and The Hill of Many Stanes dating back to c1900BC. The town has a Tourist Information Centre, railway station, a busy shopping-centre, a variety of hotels, guest houses and places to eat. Attractions include the harbour, Heritage Centre and the Old Pulteney distillery with visitor centre, established in 1826 producing a single-malt whiskey. Historic buildings include the ruins of the Norse Castle of Old Wick (c1100s) known as The Old Man of Wick. North of Wick on the cliff-edge of Noss Head is the ancient ruined Castles of Sinclair and Girigoe. Nearby is the village of John O Groats well-known as the staring point for the long-distance footpath to Lands End, also operating a ferry service across to Orkney.
Wick’s history stretches back, at least, to the era of Norwegian rule rule in Caithness, which ended, conclusively, in 1266’s Treaty of Perth. The name Wick appears to be from a Norse word, vk, meaning bay. The Castle of Old Wick is on the coast about one kilometre south of the town.
Pulteneytown is now an area of Wick on the south side of the River Wick. Until 1902 Pulteneytown was administered separately from the Royal Burgh of Wick.
Wick Bay is an isosceles triangle with the river mouth as its apex, and the points of South Head and North Head, separated by about one kilometre,as the base of the triangle. Beyond the heads lies the North Sea. Pentland Firth line about 11 kilometres north of North Head.

I would definitely recommend you to anybody in the future." Les & Jackie Eales
